Dr. Michael W. Wilson
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience in helping people with a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, trauma, relationship issues, adjustment to physical illness, anger issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder. I provide individual therapy and psychological assessment for adults in Birmingham and the surrounding area.

I use a flexible and collaborative approach to help you make the changes you want in your life, adapting therapy to suit your needs. I like to help clients cultivate skills to achieve their goals and life satisfaction, with a strong emphasis on cognitive behavioral theory and techniques. I primarily focus on the present or the here-and-now, while helping clients to understand how historical events and relationships may still be influencing their thoughts, behavior, and emotions today. I am fully trained in several evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, interpersonal therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy.
Clinical Experience
I provide individual psychotherapy for adults (18 - 64 yrs.) and older adults (65 yrs. and older). I have prior clinical experience from working in a variety of different settings, including private practice, community mental health, the VA healthcare system, and a comprehensive medical center, which have given me the tools to provide therapy for a diverse range of clients. I strive to continue to learn to ensure that my clients are giving the best therapy that I can provide.
Clinical Training
I received coursework and training in the Medical/Clinical Psychology Program, a highly competitive APA-accredited doctoral program, at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham). The program is thoroughly grounded in the science of psychology and uses the scientist-practitioner model, which combines instructive courses, independent scientific research, and diverse, closely supervised clinical training experiences. During my clinical internship at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital, I received additional training with active military personnel and veterans, who suffer from mental health problems associated with their military service (e.g., combat-related PTSD). Overall, I have learned how to develop, implement, and evaluate procedures designed to assess, understand, and promote mental and medical health. I use these skills to guide my evaluations and treatment approach.
